"Benenden Girls"

Mark Gilbert had spent the last two years as Artist in Residence at the University of Nebraska Medical centre. The exhibition of the resultant work will run concurrently with this exhibition for three months at The Bemis Centre of Contemporary Art, Omaha.

On returning to the UK in August of this year, Gilbert took up the post of Artist in Residence at Benenden School, England. “Benenden Girls” consists of over 100 drawings of girls attending one of the UKs’ most elite, all girl boarding schools. The drawings were executed from life over the past 2 months.

Gilbert attended the Glasgow School of Art and he has shown his work internationally in solo exhibitions at such venues as the Royal Scottish Academy (Edinburgh), the National Portrait Gallery (London), the Museum of Modern Art (Wales), Medicinhistoriska Museet (Stockholm) and Yale University. His work has been reviewed in publications such as The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, Il Messagerro Dominica, the South China Morning Post, Der Spiegel, New York Times, the Sddeutsche Zeitung and the International Herald Tribune.
